Emergency Management

An Emergency Management Coordinator (EMC) is responsible for helping the City of Slaton prepare for, respond to, recover from, and mitigate emergencies and disasters. The role is both planning-focused and operational, especially during an actual emergency.

Planning & Preparedness

  • Develops and maintains the Emergency Operations Plan (EOP)

  • Creates plans for specific hazards (severe weather, fires, hazmat spills, active threats, etc.)

  • Coordinates emergency drills, tabletop exercises, and full-scale exercises

  • Ensures departments know their roles during emergencies

Coordination & Response

  • Serves as a central point of contact during disasters or major incidents

  • Activates and helps run the Emergency Operations Center (EOC)

  • Coordinates with police, fire, EMS, public works, utilities, schools, hospitals, and volunteer organizations

  • Works with county, state (TDEM), and federal (FEMA) agencies

Training & Compliance

  • Ensures staff and officials complete required emergency management training

  • Maintains compliance with state and federal emergency management standards

  • Tracks certifications and continuing education

Public Information & Outreach

  • Helps develop emergency alerts and public messaging (evacuations, shelter info, safety updates)

  • Educates the public on preparedness (storm safety, evacuation routes, emergency kits)

  • Supports elected officials with accurate, timely information

Recovery

  • Coordinates post-disaster damage assessments

  • Assists with disaster declarations

  • Works on long-term recovery planning
